Greece today is a stable country with a population of some 11.000.000. The annual growth rate of the population is approximately 0.5%. The healthy Mediterranean diet enjoyed by the Greek people increases the life expectancy to 75 years of age for males and 80 years of age for females, the highest in Central and Southern Eastern Europe. Life expectance in Greece also exceeds the European average. Five hundred years before the birth of Christ, Greece was the center of the Western World. The impact of the Hellenic legacy on language, culture, architecture, science and politics is immeasurable and is apparent today. The civilization itself diminished with the rise of the Roman empire and other powers, however, its language and culture was never eradicated and was maintained by the Byzantine Empire (the eastern half of the Roman Empire and the heart of the Orthodox Church). Greece remerged as an independent nation in1830 after war and centuries of occupation by the Ottoman Empire. Greece also experienced other occupations, civil war and military rule until democracy was restored in 1974. Throughout these periods in Greece's history, education has remind a high priority for the Greeks. Today Greece has one of the highest Adult literacy rates in Europe at 95.2%. Perhaps as a result of centuries of occupation, the Greeks are passionate about politics. Greece today is a very stable democracy. The country's 2 main political parties, New Demecratia (Conservative) and Pasok (Socialists), are equally matched in the political arena. Both have at their hearts the growth and stability of this great country. The public health authorities under both political parties have equally transformed the health service into an efficient modern service run by the State. The hospitals have all the up to date facilities. Greece has also invented new forms of medial procedures. One particular area is the pioneering of the leaser treatment for eyes. The Greeks of today have a healthy and wealthy lifestyle. Greece is a parliamentary republic based on the separation and balancing of legislative, executive and judicial powers. The Constitution is the highest law in the Republic of Greece. The President of the Republic regulates the functions of the powers of the State. He is elected by Parliament for a term of five years and his office is incompatible with any other office, position, or function. To be elected President the person should receive a two-thirds majority of the total number of members of Parliament. He appoints the Prime Minister and, at the recommendation of the latter, he also appoints the rest of the members of the Government and the Deputy Ministers. Also the president represent the State in its relations to other States, declare war, conclude treaties of peace, alliance, economic cooperation and participation in international organizations or unions and proclaims referendums. He has the right of veto for the laws passed by Parliament. President: Constantinos Stephanopoulos (since March 1995 - in second term) Executive : The Government consists of the Cabinet which comprises the Prime Minister and Ministers. The Government determines and directs the general policy of the State, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws. The Prime Minister shall safeguard the unity of the Government and direct the activity thereof and that of public services in general with a view to implementing Government policy within the framework of the law. The Government must enjoy the confidence of Parliament. The members of the Cabinet and the Deputy Ministers shall be jointly responsible for the general policies of the Government. Prime minister: Costas Karamanlis (since 10 March 2004) Legislative : The Constitution of 1975, as revised in 1986, defines the political system of Greece as a Parliamentary Democracy with a President as head of state. In other words, the system is centred around the Parliament, one of the two legislative authorities of the country. The other is the President of the Republic. Judiciary : Justice is administered by the courts, which consists of regular judges who enjoy personal and functional independence. There is a Supreme Court, Appeal Courts and First Instance Courts. A Special Supreme Tribunal deals with the remedy of conflicts between the courts and administrative authorities, or between the Council of State, which is the highest instance, and the regular administrative courts of the one part and of the other part the civil or penal courts, or, finally, between the Council of Comptrollers and the rest of the courts. Political Parties : Socialist party of Greece (PASOK) New Democracy Party Synaspismos-Coalition of the Left & Progress Democratic Social Movement Modern Greece has all the luxuries available in other European countries. Telecommunications are modern and ADSL internet connections are now common. In the mobile phone sector there is now 95% coverage in Greece. Public transport has also been transformed with new fleets of buses, fast new high speed ferry links and new regional airports have opened Greece up to a wider audience making the whole country more accessible.
